Here are a few remarkable stories of astonishing success by these former Future Professionals.
Brandon Thomas Hoover a.k.a. Gauge
After graduating, Gauge started his career at Zoe Salon and Spa in Fairfax, Virginia. After only three years behind the chair, he was voted “Best Stylist” in Washington Blades, ‘Best of Gay DC.’ He currently works in one of NYC’s most successful salons ‘Dramatics NYC’ as an Artistic Stylist. “It’s a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together. This business can take you anywhere. Dream Big!” exclaims Gauge.
Gauge was a hairstylist for the production of “Mission for Love” at Irving Plaza in Union Square, conducted monthly editorial photo shoots with his salon/local photographers and was one of nine stylists competing for “Star Stylist” for a live hair competition.
His mentors are Nora Battey of Zoe Salon and Spa. “Not only is she an incredible hairdresser, but everything she does comes from a place of passion and love. She is a true creative spirit who enhances every stylist she meets. I can only hope to inspire future hairdressers as much as she inspired me,” shares Gauge.
Tip for Future Professionals: “Don’t settle, if you see bigger things for yourself, go get it! Nothing is standing between you and your dreams! Be open to learning new things, everyone you meet has something to teach you! Take everything the culture of Paul Mitchell has to offer, and use it! It works!! Paws up,” says Gauge!
Dana Ratliff Howson
The moment Dana walked into The TEMPLE: A Paul Mitchell Partner School, she knew she was home! Dana loved how guest speakers spoke on the many aspects and careers there are within the beauty industry. Being on every team The TEMPLE: A Paul Mitchell Partner School offered allowed her to travel and participate in many different aspects of the industry while giving back at the same time. Dana raised money so she could go to the Caper event in Vegas, which she felt was incredible!
Dana has now been in the beauty industry for 20 years. She received her make-up license in 1995 while she was counter manager for Elizabeth Arden and Dermablend, and her full Cosmetology license in 2007. Dana has always gravitated towards up-styles and color. She went from being behind the counter to hair and make-up for head shots/calling cards. Currently, she is a Regional Color Coordinator for JPMS, hair stylist for Shear Dimensions Salon and Spa, and an up style specialist for Up Do’s for I Do’s.
Tips for Future Professionals: “While you are in school, take the time to really learn your craft and build your foundation. You have invested a lot of money, and you will need a strong, sturdy foundation to build upon as you grow in this beautiful industry,” shares Dana.

At The TEMPLE: A Paul Mitchell Partner School, Devin learned how to learn. It started with being open and saying yes – to relationships, to education, to his creativity, to setting high goals and even to dreams. Sharon showed him by her example how to show up positive and polished for any situation in our industry. Charles taught him in his famous ‘soap is just soap’ speech that the most important thing in the service industry is simply to give (and give back). Devin learned countless lessons from all of the staff and Future Professionals at The TEMPLE: A Paul Mitchell Partner School!
As Ted Gibson’s protégé and Director of Education for Ted Gibson Beauty, Devin currently brings his expertise and passion to Salon SCK. Devin has styled hair at over 60 NYC fashion shows, created TV makeovers for Oprah, Rachel Ray and Nate Berkus television shows, and worked with many other celebrities, brides and beauty editors. Most recently, he styled Giorgia May Jagger (super model and rock n roll royalty) for Rimmel London and also styled models for a Dolce and Gabbana fashion show in NYC.
Tip for Future Professionals: “Have a strong professional online presence (your own website, Yelp reviews, pictures of your work, “how to” videos, blogs with hair advice). If you have questions regarding any of these things, please email me at email@example.com. Your online presence should begin before you start interviewing at salons,” shares Devin.

Candis wanted to be a hairdresser since childhood, but took a more traditional path for her education by receiving her B.S. degree in Finance in 2003. Three years later, she decided to pursue her dream and enrolled in The TEMPLE: A Paul Mitchell Partner School. Her life changed the day she toured the facility!
After she was licensed, Candis was a learning leader with The TEMPLE: A Paul Mitchell Partner School for three years, and while employed with us, she was certified as a national educator with Paul Mitchell. She also received her senior cosmetology license while working partime behind the chair. In 2009, Candis finally found what she was looking for – Floyd’s 99 Barbershop! In a very short period of time, Candis moved up from shop manager, first as a member of Floyd’s education team, then as a multi-unit manager and now as a district manager. It has been a busy seven years for Candis!
Tip for Future Professionals: “Do your personal best every day. If your personal best is not good enough, do not make excuses. Get better! Surround yourself with people who are better than you, and you will rise to the challenge. Know that the extra effort you put in is noticed and will be rewarded. Do not let yourself be influenced by people who do not share your passion. Know that the people who give minimal effort when you give you all have, will only make you shine that much brighter. Without mediocrity there is no excellence,” shares Candis.
