At THE TEMPLE academies, our award-winning cosmetology classes prepare you for the beauty industry as a licensed cosmetologist.
Our curriculum covers all aspects of the beauty industry including design, cutting, coloring, multicultural techniques, makeup, fashion trends, manicuring, pedicuring, basic facials, and the art of hairdressing. You will be guided by our learning leaders through our Cosmetology program’s three levels—Core, Adaptive and Creative—taking on more advanced techniques and building real-world skills and confidence as you move through each stage.
THE TEMPLE academies are proud to be able to offer flexible Cosmetology program schedules! That means you’ll feel empowered to pursue your education goals while also being able to keep up with the demands of modern life.
YOUR EDUCATION JOURNEY
The State of Maryland requires 1500 clock hours for graduation and testing in Cosmetology.
During the first 350 hours, you will be in the Core Phase of the program. Your time in Core is spent in classroom work consisting of lecture, demonstrations, practice on manikins and, of course, evaluations. Upon completion of your first 350 hours, assuming the completion of all assigned work, maintenance of all grade and attendance levels, and having secured the official recommendation of your learning leader, you will advance to the Adaptive Phase and be permitted to practice on guests in our clinic.
Adaptive is where you will practice and perfect the fundamental skills learned in Core. Adaptive-level students work on live models in a clinic classroom-like environment with the oversight and support of their learning leaders.
From Adaptive, you will transition into the Creative Phase where you will finish your education. All of your time during Adaptive and Creative Phases will be spent on practical work, additional advancement lectures, class projects and complete subject reviews as well as clinic classroom management techniques. The Creative Phase is where you will begin to expand your skills and learn more advanced and creative techniques. At this level you will prepare to become clinic classroom-ready by working more independently. You will also build a résumé and portfolio and prepare to pass the state board test in this phase.
Once you have successfully finished 1380 hours of the course, you can apply for permission to take the Maryland State Board of Cosmetology Exam, then sit for the THEORY portion of the exam. When you have successfully completed the course (1500 hours), and the Board of Cosmetology issues you your test date, you may sit for the Practical portion of the exam.
All courses are taught in English. The course includes extensive instruction and practical experience in cutting, hair coloring, perming, nail care, skin care, customer service, personal appearance & hygiene, personal motivation & development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, as well as sanitation, state laws & regulations, clinic classroom type administration, and job interviewing.
THE TEMPLE academies are accredited by NACCAS and use its calculation for student placement based on each program offered. NACCAS shows that for the most recent annual reporting period that the program has a placement rate of 71%.
On-time completion is defined by the U.S. Department of Education as anyone who graduates within the normal completion time. When a student completes their graduation requirements, including all theory and practical assignments, and the required number of clock hours contracted for within their original contracted graduation date, that student is considered to have graduated on-time.
If a student delays their graduation for any reason, such as family responsibilities, day care issues, and other life events, which causes them to graduate after their original contract end date they are not considered an on-time graduate. Please note that our graduation rates that are provided in the school catalog are based on how many students started the program and how many completed within the reporting period.
Three Phases of Advancement
(First 350 Hours)
During the first 10 weeks, time is spent introducing the basic fundamentals in classroom work consisting of lectures, demonstrations, practice on manikins and evaluations. You’ll learn the foundational rules needed prior to working with clients in the clinic. Upon completion of 350 hours, turning in all your assigned work, maintaining all grade and attendance levels, and upon recommendation of your learning leader, you will advance to the Adaptive Phase.
In this phase, you will be permitted to practice on guests in our clinic. Your time will now be spent on practical work, additional advancement lectures, class projects, subject reviews and clinic classroom management techniques. Learning will be guided through this phase with individual attention and group learning and your progress will be monitored. This is an intense study phase designed to build on the basics you learned in the Core Phase.
This is the final phase in which you will enter a new arena of classroom workshops coupled with challenging practical services designed to build you into a confident professional. Although this phase gets tougher, it’s where you’ll learn more advanced dressing and chemical work and your supervisors will begin to defer client handling and service choices to you. If you meet the challenges, soon you’ll be heading to the end run of your program and you’ll have the opportunity to spend your last six weeks at THE TEMPLE: A Paul Mitchell Partner School by dressing, acting and working like a true professional.
